Full-time Practice Manager

More on Sue..

I am fortunate to have Sue Fowler, my full-time practice manager, who is able to rapidly respond to medical or administrative queries.

I pride myself that I and my team are always able to provide a rapid and efficient response to any concern or complication. I feel most strongly that as a Surgeon my responsibility to the patients under my care extends to any problems experienced following discharge, and I feel that I and my team, rather than your General Practitioner, should be on hand to deal with any concerns.

Patient focused approach

I have a “patient -focused” approach to care and my philosophy is that I will do my utmost to make an accurate diagnosis and instigate treatment. I am aware that I may not be able to definitively deal with a given problem, but if I cannot organize appropriate care, I have a network of colleagues in other specialties who will be able to assist.

I am therefore very happy to utilise the services of (and frequently work closely with) Physiotherapists, Osteopaths, Chiropractors, Sports Masseurs, Acupuncturists and Podiatrists.

I am recognised by all heath insurance companies and can confirm that my fees (and those of my anaesthetic colleagues) do not exceed the maxima. I can offer consultation appointment times from 9am to 8pm.

I have an interest in Hip and knee replacement and revision replacement, sports medicine including injuries to hips, keyhole knee surgery, knee ligament reconstruction (including Anterior Cruciate ligaments) and calf and foot problems. As a keen runner and cyclist I understands the needs of the athlete and I am committed to allowing people of all abilities to return to sports and physical activity if at all possible.

In terms of surgical volume, I undertake three times the UK average Orthopaedic Surgeon’s number of Hip and Knee replacements per year

SPECIAL INTERESTS

My special interests are lower limb joint replacement including minimal access hip and knee replacement. I have developed a minimal access approach to the hip and have used this in over 1000 cases of hip replacement. The use of this approach has drastically reduced the need for blood transfusions in hip replacement surgery to less than 1 in 5 patients, compared to the average which is up to 1 in 3. This has also significantly reduced the in-patient stay for these procedures to an average of four to five days. Patients are then able to regain strength and confidence, leading to a more rapid recovery. Furthermore, a reduced length of hospital stay helps to avoid the (very small) risk of contracting MRSA infection. I use a variety of prostheses (artificial joints), which I tailors to the requirements of the patient.

I am also experienced in the management of knee arthritis with Total condylar knee replacement.

My other area of special interest is sports and activity injuries and I am devoutly committed to the benefits of exercise and will do all I can to rapidly diagnose, treat and rehabilitate such injuries often using a network of specialist colleagues.
